Displayed at the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, “Laur Chanda” is an illustrated manuscript of one of India’s earliest Sufi love stories, the Chandayana. With the spread of Sufism, around the 14th century, Avadhi romantic literature gained popularity in the courts of northern India. Many of the texts used the imagery of human love to symbolise love for the divine.
Chandayana narrates the love story of Laur and Chanda, who were characters in regional folk ballads of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and parts of central India.
