The Mumbai City Civil Session Court on Thursday sent a man to police custody till July 10 for allegedly threatening to rape Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi’s daughter, The Times of India reported.
The accused, identified as Girish Maheshwari, was arrested from Ahmedabad. He threatened Chaturvedi on Twitter on Sunday night. He had threatened Chaturvedi on Twitter on Sunday night. “On immediate call we acted on the matter,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Mumbai) Deepak Deoraj told ANI. “A team was sent to probe the case and the accused was arrested in few hours.”
Maheshwari has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Information Technology Act, besides relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, The Times of India reported.
Chaturvedi thanked the Mumbai Police, the Delhi Police and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh after Maheshwari’s arrest.
On Monday, the Congress leader filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police after she received the threat on social media. A day later, Rajnath Singh directed both the Mumbai Police and the Delhi Police to file cases in the matter. The government also asked Twitter to provide details of the account that made the threat, a home ministry spokesperson said.
Chaturvedi said she became the target of online harassment after a quote falsely attributed to her in connection with the recent gangrape of an eight-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district was shared on social media.
The threat drew outrage from Twitter users and was taken down later.
