Around 1.5 lakh people whose names figured in the first draft of the National Register of Citizens in Assam will not be included in the final draft, which will be published by July 30. Prateek Hajela, the coordinator for the National Register of Citizens, said on Wednesday that these names will be excluded because of the absence of a family lineage, The Hindu reported.
“Names of 65,694 people, which appeared in the first draft, were found to be inadmissible during the family tree verification, as were names of 48,456 married women who submitted panchayat certificates as linkage,” he said. “Names of another 19,783 people were found to be inadmissible during quality control checks.”
Those whose names do not figure in the final draft will have the opportunity to file claims later, Hajela said. The coordinator, in his report to the Supreme Court, said that the process of verification has been completed and data entry work was being done. This will be completed by July 20 and the quality control checks by July 30.
The Supreme Court on Monday extended the deadline for publishing the final draft to July 30, after Hajela said it would not be possible to bring out the document by June 30 due to floods in parts of Assam.
Assam began to update the National Register of Citizens in 2015 to create a definitive list of citizens of the state. The first draft was published on January 1, and has verified 1.9 crore people out of the 3.29 crore who applied.
