India’s Prime Ministers, more than its Presidents, have been the face of the country. For over 70 years, nearly all of India’s policy has hinged on a handful of men and one woman. Modern India has largely been shaped by these 14 figures. Some have served for decades and some for only a few weeks. All with varying degrees of success.
India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru spent nearly 17 years at the helm. Subsequently a Nehru-Gandhi has occupied the office for 37 years since Independence. Up until 2004, a non-Congress Prime Minister-led government had not lasted more than three years, let alone an entire term.
The office has witnessed the Emergency, assassinations, multiple economic crises and a slew of problems since its inception. So given that independent India is on 71 years old, how much do you know about its leaders? Head on to our quiz test your knowledge.
