The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea seeking a court-monitored probe into financial scams, including the Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud, PTI reported.
A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices DY Chandrachud and AM Khanwilkar was hearing a public interest litigation filed by advocate Manohar Lal Sharma, who alleged that banks would not release large amounts of funds without the intervention of the political leadership.
“In view of the unwarranted, uncalled for and vexatious assertions made in the petition, we are not inclined to entertain this petition,” the court said. “The petition is dismissed.”
Attorney General KK Venugopal sought dismissal of the petition, pointing out that it levelled baseless allegations against the prime minister and the finance minister, according to Live Law.
“What kind of PILs are you filing?” Justice DY Chandrachud asked Sharma. “You read some newspaper report and straight away [came] to court filing it in the form of a petition and you also make personal allegations. These PILs are not PILs at all.”
The court also dismissed another petition filed by Sharma that sought to re-file the plea by deleting the names of the political leaders.
