The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday arrested the chief engineer of the Military Engineering Services, Rakesh Kumar Garg, and five other people from the naval base in Kerala’s Kochi in connection with a corruption case. The agency recovered an alleged bribe of Rs 1.21 crore, PTI quoted officials as saying.
The agency had Garg’s office and residence on Sunday as part of its investigation into alleged corruption and irregularities in the tendering for construction works at the naval base. The Military Engineering Service carries out all civil works for the Indian military, such as building and maintaining living quarters, training establishments and offices.
The CBI had launched an investigation after getting information that Garg was “collecting and demanding illegal gratification of 1% of contract amount from contractors for issuing various civil contracts in the Kochi naval base”, CBI officials said.
Besides Garg’s home and office, the CBI searched 20 locations in Delhi, Kochi, Ajmer and Kolkata, officials said, adding that 6 kg of gold biscuits and an additional Rs 3.97 crore were recovered during these searches.
