Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday pitched for a fixed number of terms for an individual for the posts of prime minister and chief minister, PTI reported. The Lok Sabha MP from Guna addressed reporters at an event at the Central Press Club in Bhopal.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh are both seeking their fourth term in office in state Assembly elections scheduled for later this year. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is seeking a third term in the office.

“I am against the principle of giving extensions,” Scindia, chairman of Congress’ election committee, said, according to the Hindustan Times. “In fact, chief ministers should also have fixed terms. It might be one or two terms as it is for the United States’ president, and then he should plan and perform within that period and move on and give chance to another person.”

He also said that he was against the extensions given by Centre and state governments to bureaucrats who are ready to retire. “I am averse to the Centre and state governments moving to hire retired government bureaucrats. If someone is retiring, he should relinquish office and make way for the person in waiting.”

Scindia demanded inquiries by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the murder of a farmer in Berasia, and the gangrape of an 8-year-old girl in Mandsaur. Two people have been arrested in connection with the rape case. “One hears of horrifying rape stories from all over Madhya Pradesh,” the Congress leader said. “The law is not deterring the people as there is no proper implementation of it in the state.”
