At least 48 people were killed and 10 injured on Sunday after a bus they were travelling in plunged into a gorge in Dhumakot area of Pauri Garhwal district in Uttarakhand, PTI reported. The bus was travelling from Bhoan to Ramnagar.
Several people were injured in the accident and were provided medical treatment.
Garhwal Police Commissioner Dilip Jawalkar said the toll was expected to rise, NDTV reported. The State Disaster Response Force and the state police are undertaking the rescue operation.
“We have confirmed deaths of 47 passengers,” Senior Superintendent of Police (Pauri) Jagatram Joshi told the Hindustan Times earlier. “Two critically injured were taken to Ramnagar while nine others were given primary medication at Dhumakot.”
Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said he was on his way to the site of the accident. He said he had apprised Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Health Minister JP Nadda of the matter and that they had assured all help. The chief minister also announced Rs 2 lakh each to the family of the victims and Rs 50,000 each to those injured.
