A flood alert was issued in South Kashmir on Friday after the water level of the Jhelum river crossed the danger mark following incessant rainfall. The water level crossed the mark of 21 feet at Sangam in Anantnag district, Greater Kashmir reported.
“At 6 pm, the water level in Jhelum was 21.33 feet,” Mir Muhammad Shahnawaz, the chief engineer for irrigation and flood control, said. “We have already deputed staff on the ground. They are continuously monitoring the water levels at different places,” he added according to Kashmir Reader.
Schools will remain closed in Kashmir on Saturday because of the threat of floods, Jammu and Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Baseer Ahmed Khan said.
