Anupam Kher on Wednesday revealed the first look of Arjun Mathur as Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Aahana Kumra as his sister Priyanka in The Accidental Prime Minister. Kher plays former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Vijay Ratnakar Gutte’s political drama.
The Accidental Prime Minister has been adapted from policy analyst Sanjay Baru’s 2014 memoir of the same name. Baru served as Singh’s media advisor from May 2004 to August 2008, and his book is critical of Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister. The memoir claims that Singh was “defanged” by the Congress party in his second term, and was forced to “surrender” to Sonia Gandhi, who was party president at the time.
The Accidental Prime Minister stars Akshaye Khanna as Baru, debutant Ram Avatar Bhardwaj as Atal Bihaji Vajpayee, Divya Seth Shah as Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur, and Suzanne Bernert as Sonia Gandhi. It will be released on December 21, the same day as Anand L Rai’s Zero, starring Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma.
