In the trailer of Amazon Studios’ Beautiful Boy, conversations between a father and his son are ripe with angst and helplessness as they try to understand each other. Beautiful Boy chronicles the relationship between Nic Sheff (Timothee Chalamet), a young man battling drug addiction, and his father David (Steve Carrell), who watches him cope and attempts to help.
The movie is based on David Sheff’s 2008 memoir Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey through his Son’s Addiction and Nic Sheff’s Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphitamines (2007), both of which chronicle the repercussions of Nic Sheff’s addiction from different perspectives. Directed by Felix Van Groeningen, the biographical drama marks the English-language debut of the Belgian filmmaker. The cast also includes Amy Ryan and Maura Tierney. Beautiful Boy will be released on October 12.
Chalamet was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name in 2017. Carrell was nominated for the same award in 2014 for Bennett Miller’s biographical sports drama Foxcatcher.
