Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday claimed that there has been a ten-fold rise since 2014 in the number of beneficiaries of various social security schemes. He said around 50 crore people across the country were now covered by social security schemes, reported PTI.
“The social security schemes of the government of India help cope with the uncertainties of life,” Modi told the beneficiaries through video conferencing. The prime minister praised the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. He said the scheme laid the stress on three aspects – opening the doors of the banks for the poor, granting access to capital for small business and a social security cover for the poor and vulnerable.
About 28 crore new bank accounts have been opened under the scheme, said Modi. “I am particularly happy that more women have bank accounts,” he added. “It is important for women to be in the financial mainstream.”
The prime minister also spoke about schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana. He claimed the Atal Pension Yojana has about 1 crore subscribers, while the Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana has benefited three lakh senior citizens.
