An Army major was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district on Sunday for allegedly killing another officer’s wife, reported NDTV. The woman was found dead in New Delhi’s Brar Square area, close to the Delhi Cantonment metro station, on Saturday.
Major Nikhil Handa has been brought to Delhi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) V Singh told ANI. Singh said Handa and Shailaja Dwivedi knew each other since 2015. They reportedly got into an argument after which Handa attacked her with a knife. He allegedly slit her throat and ran over her body with his car to make it look like an accident, the police alleged.
An official vehicle had dropped off Shailaja Dwivedi at the Army Base Hospital in Cantonment area, where she had an appointment for a physiotherapy session, at 10 am on Saturday, the police said. But when the driver went to pick her up, he was told that she had not missed her appointment. She was found dead half an hour later.
“CCTV footage has indicated that the [suspected] killers had arrived at the crime spot by a car, but we will know for sure only when the case is cracked,” an unidentified investigator told Hindustan Times.
Shailaja Dwivedi and her husband Amit Dwivedi lived in the Army quarters in west Delhi’s Naraina with their six-year-old son. Amit Dwivedi, who is posted in Nagaland’s Dimapur, recently moved to Delhi for training. Handa is also posted in Dimapur at present.
