An unidentified man allegedly raped and murdered a six-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district, PTI reported on Friday. The girl’s mutilated body was found on a hill in Amkhor area, near a wedding venue, where she had gone along with her family.
CCTV footage showed the suspect luring the girl out of the venue, where she was asleep with her family, at around 1 am on Wednesday night, The Times of India reported. The suspect is seen returning alone at 2.30 am. “The footage shows that the girl tried to run away,” News18 quoted an unidentified official as saying. “However, the man succeeded in persuading her again.”
The family raised an alarm after they could not find the girl. They called the police who then recovered her body from nearby bushes on Thursday morning, PTI reported.
The suspect is believed to have come with the wedding caterers, Gwalior Superintendent of Police Naveen Basin told The Times of India. “We are close to identifying the accused,” he added.
An autopsy report confirmed that the girl was sexually assaulted before she was killed. The report said her face was probably mutilated with a large stone, News18 reported.
The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act against an unidentified person.
The incident comes months after a man was sentenced to death for raping and killing an infant in Indore.
