Suspected militants fired upon a police vehicle in Pampore area of southern Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, killing one police officer and injuring two.
All three officers were injured in the firing near Gallandar on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, an official told PTI, adding that they were taken to a nearby hospital. One of them, Constable Tanveer Ahmad, died at the hospital.
The other police personnel are undergoing treatment and are in a stable condition. The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case and have begun looking for the attackers.
This is the first attack since Governor’s rule was imposed in the state on Wednesday, a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party pulled out of the government and ended its alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party.
Chief of the Army Staff General Bipin Rawat had said on Wednesday that the imposition of Governor’s rule in the state would not affect the Army’s operations. “Our operations will go on like they used to,” the Army chief said. “We don’t face any political interference.”
