President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday approved the imposition of Governor’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect, ANI reported.
On Tuesday, the ruling coalition in the state collapsed after the Bharatiya Janata Party ended its alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party, leading to the resignation of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. The PDP has 28 seats in the 87-member Assembly while the BJP has 25.
Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Kavinder Gupta also resigned. The BJP claimed it had become “untenable” to continue with the alliance.
Following this, Governor NN Vohra forwarded his report to President Ram Nath Kovind for imposition of governor’s rule under Section 92 of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir. The president, who is on a three-nation tour, passed the order from Suriname.
