The Telangana Police on Monday arrested a block-level elected representative of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi for kicking a woman in the chest purportedly over a land dispute on Sunday, the Hindustan Times reported. A video of Dharpalli Mandal Parishad (block) president Immadi Gopi kicking A Rajavva has surfaced on social media.
Police said the victim accused Gopi of selling her a piece of land 10 months ago but not transferring it to her after repeated requests. Gopi allegedly demanded another Rs 60 lakh while citing that the land’s value had increased since. The accused and the victim’s family got into a heated argument and Rajavva filed a complaint with the Indalwai Police against Gopi.
On Sunday morning, Rajavva’s family went to the home of the accused to demand that the land be transferred, leading to another verbal confrontation between the two parties. Gopi allegedly verbally abused the family and Rajavva took off her footwear and hit him with it. The video then shows Gopi kicking her in her chest and her family members pushing him in retaliation.
“We are registering a case against Gopi for assaulting a woman and arrested him,” Indalwai police station house officer said. Indalwai police inspector Ramanujayulu said the Telangana Rashtra Samiti leader was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The Congress has called for a shutdown in the area to protest against the ruling party leader’s behaviour.
