West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will attend the NITI Aayog meeting on Sunday, June 17, after her initial decision to skip it. Banerjee had said that since Eid celebrations would be on June 16 – the first date chosen for the meeting – she would not attend. The governing council meeting has now been pushed by a day.
“I had told that we have to participate in prayers and various programmes on Eid and the meeting was then postponed to June 17,” PTI reported Banerjee as saying in Kolkata on Friday. “I have to go tomorrow [Saturday] even though I am not much willing to attend it. I am going because it is possibly the last meeting of NITI Aayog. Also a number of Chief Ministers have requested me to go there as they want to discuss the situation of their states,” IANS reported her as saying.
Besides Banerjee, a few other leaders including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had also expressed reluctance to attend the meeting originally scheduled for June 16.
The governing council meeting will be in New Delhi and will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
