After Childish Gambino’s searing takedown of the USA in music, titled This is America, it had to only be a matter of time before artists from other parts of the world followed suit with versions for their respective countries. Among the first off the block appears to be the Nigerian rapper Falz (video above) – with similar sentiments and even similar choreography.
Loosely following the same structure as the original video, Falz raps about corruption amongst politicians and in the police, their nexus with criminals, and violence on the streets. Terrifyingly, this could be the story of many countries around the world.
Folarin Falana was born in 1990, and uses Falz as his stage name. The track starts with the voice of his father, the lawyer and human rights activist Femi Falana, before seguing into Falz’s sharp lyrics.
