According to reports, such as this one on NDTV, the man is a Muslim who was heckled by a large gathering of people threatening to turn violent.

According to the report, Singh received information of trouble and rushed to the spot, where he can be seen in the video above throwing himself physically between the young man and the crowd to protect the former.
