The first trailer of Amazon’s web series, Too Old To Die Young, co-written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, promises a showcase of the elements that have come to be associated with Refn’s films. The trailer features criminals, police officers and other grimy characters entangled in a seemingly dangerous environment, shot in high-contrast colours, and cut to a synth-based electronic score. The 10-episode series has been written by Refn and American comic book writer Ed Brubaker.
While no plot details have been revealed, the Los Angeles-based series has been described by the makers as similar to Refn’s Pusher trilogy of films that revolve around Copenhagen’s criminal underbelly. Too Old To Die Young will explore the characters’ “existential journeys from being killers to becoming samurais in the city of angels”, the statement read. The ensemble cast includes Miles Teller, John Hawkes, William Baldwin, Nell Tiger Free and Celestino Cornielle, and is yet to have a release date.
