As the American Idol 2018 finale was playing out, television talk show host Jimmy Kimmel walked out on stage, followed by a so-called time capsule, in which, he claimed, memorabilia from past shows had been buried.
Pulling out some of them with accompanying jokes, Kimmel pretended to be astonished when a former star, Sanjaya Malakar, also emerged. The American singer, who is partly of Indian origin, had appeared on the 2006 edition as a teenager with his sister Shyamali, and made it to the final, where he earned a high share of the public vote.
Here is their audition.
PS: Also on the show, finalists Caleb Lee Hutchinson, who came second, and Maddie Poppe, who won admitted they were dating each other. Here’s the winning performance.
