Days of incessant rain led to flash floods in Tripura on Monday, triggering landslides that killed six people and displaced 3,000 families. The rain left Gomati, Sipajhila, Khowai and West Tripura districts water logged. Scenes of deluge emerged from the state capital of Agartala, where several city wards were flooded.
Water levels in several rivers remained high, including the Haora river which runs through Agartala. According to a public alert put out by the Central Water Commission, the water level in the Gumti River at Sonamura was 11.55 metres at 3pm on March 21, above the danger level of 11.5 metres. It was expected to recede to 11.4 metres by 9 pm, the warning said.
Relief camps were set up as the National Disaster Management Response Force, the fire service and local volunteers swung into action. By evening, as the rain stopped and the waters started receding, some of those displaced by the flood tried to return to their homes, a local journalist said.
