The Congress on Friday decided to file an appeal in the Supreme Court against Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala appointing Bharatiya Janata Party MLA KG Bopaiah the pro-tem speaker a day before the floor test in the Assembly, Live Law reported. The court will hear the matter at 10.30 am on Saturday, reported ANI.
Earlier, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that party MLA RV Deshpande should have been appointed the pro-tem speaker as he is the senior-most member of the legislature.
He also accused Bopaiah of having no regard for the Constitution and law. Surjewala claimed that Bopaiah had favoured Karnataka Chief Minister Yeddyurappa when he was the speaker, from 2009 to 2013.
The Supreme Court had on Friday morning said that Yeddyurappa, who the governor has invited to form the government, should prove his majority on the floor of the House at 4 pm on Saturday. Vala had earlier granted Yeddyurappa 15 days to prove majority.
