Many musicians showed they’re far from oblivious to the marketing potential of Mother’s Day in 2018, releasing a spate of new music videos dedicated to their mothers specifically, and mothers in general. They paid tributes, thanked them, honoured them and, in some cases, summed up their own motherhood – essentially what the rest of the world did on social media, but with professional music videos.
For instance, there was Lykke Li’s moving music video Utopia (video above), which features home movies of Li with her mother and her son. She wrote in the video description: “Utopia is all my mother ever wanted for me and all I ever want for [my son].”
Matthew West, too, shared a heartfelt song to honour his own mother as well as his wife Emily. At the same time, the video features a diverse group of mothers and their children, and is dedicated to “all the moms who go all in every day, raising us well and loving us strong.”
It wasn’t very different for Kacey Musgraves, whose video, simply titled Mother, is a visual representation of her childhood and the influence her mother had on her youth.
Ashley Monroe, with Mother’s Daughter, Kelly Clarkson’s Meaning of Life and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats’ Hey Mama paint similar pictures of the importance of mothers (respective videos below).
Even SZA teased a special Mother’s Day video featuring, of course, her mother and Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino.
But it wasn’t all emotions and tributes from the artists. Some, like in the case of Jennifer Garner, decided to take a funny road on Mother’s Day. The actress and singer who co-hosted the annual Mother’s Day episode on The Ellen DeGeneres Show started with a hilarious video in which she raps, jokes and does more.
