Israel has claimed that Iranian forces fired 20 missiles towards its military positions in the Golan Heights area early Thursday. No injuries were reported, and Israel intercepted several rockets, Haaretz reported.
The claims came just over a day after United States President Donald Trump said he was pulling his country out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Israel, a staunch ally, supports the US’ decision. Israel has been on alert since Trump announced his decision to exit the Iran deal.
There were reports of heavy military jet activity, explosions and firing throughout the night in Golan Heights area, according to The Washington Post. The Israeli military said the rockets were fired by the Quds Force of Iran. This is the first time Iranian forces have directly launched an attack on Israeli troops.
Military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said Israel had retaliated against the attack on its outposts, Reuters reported.
Syrian state media, however, reported that it was Israel that had fired on targets near a town just east of the Golan Heights. Iran is an ally of Syria, and is engaged in a proxy war with Israel in the shadow of the Syrian civil war.
