Police in Hyderabad arrested a ward attendant at a government hospital on Saturday for allegedly raping a woman, PTI reported. A home guard was arrested on the charge of not reporting the matter despite “observing” the incident, police said.

In a complaint on Friday, the woman said she had gone to Osmania General Hospital to get a medico-legal certificate after her husband beat her up, The Times of India reported. Before going to the hospital, she had filed a police complaint against her husband for domestic violence.

The ward attendant approached her as she was sitting in a waiting hall, and took her to the first floor of the hospital to rape her, she claimed. He also allegedly threatened her with dire consequences if she reported the matter.

The hospital has suspended the ward attendant, The New Indian Express reported. He was booked under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code, and the home guard was booked under Section 116 (abetting offence punishable with imprisonment).

“It is very shocking that this could happen with so many staff members around,” the hospital’s superintendent Dr B Nagender said. “Since the ward boy and even the home guard have been at the hospital for long, I presume they knew the deserted spot.”
