The Kolkata Police on Friday registered a suo motu First Information Report to probe an alleged incident of moral policing where a couple were beaten up by a mob in a metro train compartment allegedly for hugging each other, reported PTI.
“We have already started taking action so that those who were involved in the incident can be identified and nabbed,” said Deputy Commissioner (North) Debasis Sarkar. Police registered the case after a petition signed by several metro passengers was forwarded by Kolkata Metro authorities, according to PTI.
On May 2, Kolkata Metro authorities said they had gone through CCTV footage and “nothing concrete” was found to take action against those who allegedly assaulted the couple. The authorities said the couple too had not come forward to lodge a complaint. The incident triggered protests outside Tollygunge and Dumdum Metro stations in Kolkata where youngsters offered ‘free hugs’.
