The Jharkhand Police arrested 14 people in connection with the alleged gangrape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in Chatra district, ANI reported on Saturday. Six accused are still missing, said a police officer.
The girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped on Thursday night when she had gone to her cousin’s house to attend a wedding. On Friday, four men allegedly burnt her to death after the panchayat of Raja Kendua village imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on them for raping her.
“The panchayat was convened to settle the issue when the accused and others thrashed the girl’s parents and set the girl on fire,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Pitamber Singh Kherwar had said. “She died on the spot.”
The district administration has announced a compensation of R. 2.5 lakh to the girl’s family.
