11.55 pm: That’s it from us tonight. Join us again on Saturday for the double header – Chennai Super Kings vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Delhi Daredevils.
Man of the match Suryakumar Yadav: I’m enjoying opening the innings and pushing it really hard every game. I’m trying to give the team a good start whether we are setting a total or chasing. I’m trying to keep it very simple and play my natural game. I’m feeling very good and trying to improve my game. I would like to finish games going ahead.
Rohit: We’re still alive. Good performance. Was needed for us. We wanted everyone to come out and perform – a collective effort. To be able to restrict them to 175 was a great effort from the bowling unit. We weren’t in a great situation after the first 10 overs of the chase but we backed ourself to get the target. The way we went about our chase in the first 10 overs, we needed some momentum and that’s why I sent Hardik ahead of me and held myself back. It always looks nice when you finish off things but we always backed ourselves. We’ve been giving a bit too many runs in the last few overs. For us it’s important to not look too far ahead. We have to take one game at a time and think how we can deliver the goods as a team. It’s a big challenge for us to continue with this momentum going forward. Today was a perfect night for us – we did exactly what we had spoken of before the match.
11.40 pm: Punjab skipper R Ashwin says the wicket was a bit sticky but his team still did not have enough runs on the board despite Stoinis’s blitz at the end.
11.38 pm: Mumbai’s win pushes them up to fifth in the table, but still four points behind Kings XI Punjab, who remain in fourth. Punjab also have a game in hand over Mumbai, so there’s still a lot of work to do for Mumbai.
11.35 pm: What a win for Mumbai! They needed 108 runs from the last 10 overs and 57 off the last five! Brilliant stuff at the end from Krunal and Rohit. Mumbai need five more wins, though, to reach the playoffs.
MI 176/4 in 19 overs
Andrew Tye gets to bowl the penultimate over and he begins with a short and slow one, which is cut by Krunal for a boundary. Another slower but fuller one follows and Krunal launches it over long-on for a six! That’s the match! The match ends with four leg-byes despite a huge shout for lbw but Punjab don’t have a review left after wasting it in the first over. MI win by six wickets!
MI 159/4 in 18 overs
Marcus Stoinis is handed the ball for a very important 18th over of the chase. He bowls too full to Rohit who gladly obliges and beautifully drives him through the covers for four! Krunal then picks up Stoinis’s slower ball and it’s again too full as he too slaps it through the covers for four! Krunal finds another boundary as he flicks a low full toss on his pads to the fine-leg fence! Krunal ends the over by launching Stoinis for a huge six over wide long-on! Aww jeez! Has Stoinis just lost this for Punjab? Looks like it! 20 runs off the over! MI need just 16 off the last 12 balls!
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has just reached an incredible, unbelievable milestone:
MI 139/4 in 17 overs
Mujeeb is back for his final over and Rohit Sharma whacks him over long-on for six to begin with! He goes for another big slog but misses. Rohit then steps down the track and flicks Mujeeb over deep midwicket for another six to end the over! Mumbai need three more overs like this and the match is theirs! They need 36 off the last three overs.
MI 125/4 in 16 overs – Hardik Pandya gone!
Andrew Tye is back for a third ball and his slower ball isn’t read by Pandya who swings and misses, and ends up losing his stumps! Huge wicket this for Punjab! Hardik is gone for 23 off 13 as his brother Krunal walks out at No 6. Krunal gets a boundary straight away, flicking Tye to the deep midwicket fence. Tye bowls two dot balls to end the over. MI need 50 off the last four overs!
MI 118/3 in 15 overs
Mujeeb is given a third over to make up for his terrible fielding in the previous over. He can’t as Hardik Pandya finds the middle of his bat and lofts the spinner straight down for a huge six! Class shot! Mujeeb does well in the rest of the over to concede only two more runs. MI need 57 from the last five overs.
MI 110/3 in 14 overs
Finally, finally, Rohit Sharma walks out to bat at No 5. He’s got only seven overs to turn this match around for his team, as Andrew Tye is back for his second over. Mujeeb continues with his terrible fielding, giving Pandya a bonus boundary. Stoinis then fumbles as well but thankfully for Punjab it isn’t a boundary. MI need 65 off the last six overs.
MI 100/3 in 13 overs – Ishan Kishan falls as well
Mujeeb is back for his second over after bowling a brilliant first one. Hardik picks his googly and pulls him between long-off and deep mid-wicket for four. Mujeeb then slogs and slogs hard, sending Mujeeb over deep mid-wicket for a huge six! Mujeeb, however, has the last laugh as his carrom ball foxes Kishan and breaks through his gate! MI need 75 from the last seven overs.
MI 87/2 in 12 overs – Suryakumar falls for 57
Marcus Stoinis is back for his second over as Mumbai look to move along in their chase. Suryakumar again hits the Australian to the boundary to begin the over. Stoinis however gets his man later in the over as Yadav mistimes a big heave and gives an easy high catch to Rahul behind the sticks. Big wicket for Punjab! Mumbai in a bit of trouble as Hardik Pandya walks out to bat at No 4. Still no Rohit Sharma for Mumbai! Ishan Kishan then takes advantage of a short one from Stoinis and hooks him over fine-leg for six to end the over. MI need 88 from the last eight overs.
MI 76/1 in 11 overs
Ashwin is back for his fourth and final over. His leg-spinner just bounces over Yadav’s leg stump! Ishan Kishan, who had struggled so far, then sweeps Ashwin for his first six. First boundary too for the lefty. Kishan then goes for a reverse sweep but finds the fielder. Mumbai need 99 off the last nine overs.
MI 67/1 in 10 overs
Ankit Rajpoot comes back for a third over and Suryakumar launches him straight down for a HUUUUGE six. The Mumbai opener then cuts a short and wide one for four more. Poor bowling from Rajpoot. And that’s Yadav’s 50, off 34 balls. Twelve runs from that over. Much needed for Mumbai. They need 108 more from the last 60 balls.
MI 55/1 in 9 overs
Marcus Stoinis, the star with the bat, is now handed the ball by his captain. Suryakumar again welcomes the new bowler with a boundary, hitting him straight down the ground for four. The rest of the over is again tight, as only two more runs are scored off it.
Meanwhile, over in the English County season, James Anderson has a new shade of hair colour. We will leave the commenting up to you!
MI 49/1 in 8 overs
Axar Patel is into the attack as Punjab go for a spin onslaught in Indore. Suryakumar hits him for four behind square-leg to start off but the spinner recovers well.
MI 40/1 in 7 overs
Ashwin’s back for a third over and bowls another brilliant over, giving away just one run! Kings XI are well on top in Indore!
MI 39/1 in 6 overs – Mujeeb strikes! Lewis gone
Mujeeb is handed the ball for the final over of the Powerplay and he strikes straight away! Evin Lewis fails to pick the one that keeps straight and edges to Rahul, who holds on well! Big wicket for Punjab! Ishan Kishan is in at No 3. Mujeeb completes a brilliant first over – two runs and a wicket!
MI 37/0 in 5 overs
Andrew Tye is brought into the attack and Yadav takes him on straight away, reading the slower ball and whacking it through cover for four. Tye recovers well, bowling four dots and conceding just a single.
MI 32/0 in 4 overs
Suryakumar Yadav brilliantly times a leg-side flick-lift off Rajpoot for a six over deep backward square-leg! Beautiful shot! He then finds the gap in the mid-wicket region to get a boundary. Good over for Mumbai – 12 runs off it.
MI 20/0 in 3 overs
Ashwin’s back for a second over and again concedes no boundaries. A calm start this by Mumbai but don’t count against them teeing off soon.
MI 13/0 in 2 overs
Ankit Rajpoot expectedly shares the new ball. KL Rahul gets very excited as Rajpoot finds Yadav’s thigh pad and Kings XI Punjab even waste a review on it! Poor call from Ashwin. Another tidy over for Punjab otherwise, but for the final ball which is pulled by Yadav just over deep backward square-leg for six.
MI 6/0 in 1 over
R Ashwin begins the attack himself and bowls a tidy over, conceding six singles. Suryakumar Yadav and Evin Lewis both sizing up the Punjab captain.
9.55 pm: Here is the Kings XI scorecard. Almost time for the chase!
9.45 pm: Kings XI Punjab will be thrilled with their final score considering how the middle overs went. Is this a match-winning total? It might just be! Stay tuned for the chase...
KXIP 174/6 in 20 overs
Hardik Pandya is given the responsibility of bowling the final over and he starts off with a big wide. Stoinis connects well with the re-bowled delivery and lofts it over long-off for a much-needed six! Next up, he whacks Pandya wide of long-on for a boundary! Poor stuff from Pandya to begin with but the all-rounder gets a wicket off his fourth delivery as Mayank Agarwal fails to connect a slog and gives an easy catch to Krunal. Stoinis then gives himself room and slashes Pandya to the third man fence, before pulling him for another boundary to end the innings! 22 runs in the final over! Punjab have a total they can defend!
KXIP 152/5 in 19 overs
Bumrah is back for his final over and bowls another fantastic six balls, conceding only six runs! Punjab cross 150 but it looks unlikely they will cross 165. Mumbai will be thrilled with their effort.
KXIP 146/5 in 18 overs
Mayank Agarwal comes into bat at No 7! Can you believe it? Ben Cutting bowls a good third over before Agarwal just about manages to clear long-off for a six. Eleven runs come off the over as Punjab edge closer to the 150-mark. How many more can they get?
KXIP 135/5 in 17 overs – Axar departs as well
Bumrah is given the ball for his third over and he bowls very tidily, eventually forcing Axar to go for the big one straight down the ground. Axar hits high but not long as the fielder pouches it easily! Punjab are falling apart here! Great over for Bumrah with just three runs conceded.
KXIP 132/4 in 16 overs – Karun Nair falls after cameo
McClenaghan is back for his final over and Karun Nair pulls him sweetly for a six over deep backward square-leg! The left-arm pacer however gets his man off the final ball of his spell as Karun hits him inside-out straight to long-off! Karun’s cameo is over and he’s gone for 23(12).
KXIP 123/3 in 15 overs
Markande is back for his third over and Axar Patel lifts him well over long-on for six! Markande recovers well and concedes only three more runs.
KXIP 113/3 in 14 overs
The 100 is up for Kings XI but we’re already down to the last seven overs. Punjab need a real blitz from here on if they are to go past 160, which is really the minimum score they should be going for. Karun Nair misses a swipe but his edge ends up finding the boundary anyway. He then connects better with a pull but just about clears the deep mid-wicket fielder and gets a six! Good over for Punjab! They need six more like this one.
KXIP 99/3 in 13 overs – Yuvi’s struggle is over
Yuvraj finally finds the middle of his bat as he lofts Krunal Pandya for six over wide long-on! However, he runs himself out later in the over as his bat gets stuck on the wicket while trying to make the crease! He’s gone after a run-a-ball 14. Punjab are sputtering here! And Ashwin continues to shuffle his batting order by sending Axar Patel in at No 5!
KXIP 89/2 in 12 overs – Gayle gone after half-century
Ben Cutting comes into the attack as Chris Gayle brings up his 50 off 38 balls with a single. However, the big man mistimes a big pull and finds the fielder! He’s gone for 50. Karun Nair is the new batsman at No 4. Still no Mayank Agarwal for Punjab. Yuvraj, who has struggled to score, then almost runs Karun out! Good first over for Cutting! Three runs and a wicket.
KXIP 86/1 in 11 overs
JP Duminy is given the ball at the halfway stage. He starts off well, keeping the Punjab batsmen quiet, before Gayle cuts and finds the gap and the boundary. Eight of the over.
KXIP 78/1 in 10 overs
Hardik Pandya is back for a third over and starts off with an off-cutter, which completely foxes Gayle but somehow the ball misses both his bat and the stumps! Pandya almost has Yuvi too but his mistimed cut just about evades Ishan Kishan, who gets a glove on it but can’t pouch it. A frustrated Pandya then bowls a full toss on Gayle’s pads and the big man just flicks it to the keeper’s right for four. Just six off the over though.
KXIP 72/1 in 9 overs
Markande is back for a second and almost gets Yuvraj from around the wicket. Yuvi just hands the strike to Gayle, who drives him over cover for a huge six! Next, he goes for kind of an upper cut and doesn’t connect well, but still finds the deep point boundary. Gayle is into the forties!
KXIP 58/1 in 8 overs
Hardik Pandya is back for a second over after being taken to the cleaners by Gayle in his first. Pandya mixes it up well, attacking Gayle with a short one followed by the slower one. Just four runs from it, so Pandya redeems himself.
KXIP 54/1 in 7 overs – Rahul gone for 24(20)
Mayank Markande comes into the attack as the field spreads out. But that doesn’t matter to KL Rahul who sweeps the leggie to the deep midwicket boundary. Top shot! Rahul tries a reverse sweep but finds the fielder. But Markande gets his man eventually as Rahul hits him straight to deep mid-wicket! Big wicket for Mumbai after the time-out!
Yuvraj Singh is in at No 3 and not Mayank Agarwal! Ashwin continues to surprise!
KXIP 49/0 in 6 overs
McClenaghan is back for his third over and the last of the Powerplay. He bowls short to Gayle, who pulls it mightily for a huge six! Mitch then goes for a slower ball but Gayle was expecting it and lofts him over mid-off for four! McClenaghan does well to recover after that and concedes just one run off the last three balls. Decent Powerplay for Punjab.
KXIP 37/0 in 5 overs
Jasprit Bumrah changes ends and attacks Gayle with a short one! The Punjab batsmen take four singles in the over after some tight bowling from the Indian. Good stuff!
KXIP 33/0 in 4 overs
Hardik Pandya is handed the ball. After three singles, Gayle finally gives himself room and whacks him straight down for four. Next ball, he again adjusts his position and slashes Pandya for another boundary to the deep cover region. On the last ball of the over, Gayle against slashes it over short third man for four more! The Universe Boss has woken up!
KXIP 17/0 in 3 overs
Mitch McClenaghan mixes it up with slower ones and bouncers in his second over and manages to keep the Punjab batsmen quiet. Just the one single from the over – top stuff!
KXIP 16/0 in 2 overs
Rahul gives the same treatment to Jasprit Bumrah from the other end, driving him straight-bat for a huge six! Lovely shot to watch! Bumrah then finds Gayle’s outside edge but the ball slips between first and second slip. The Universe Boss is yet to launch.
KXIP 9/0 in 1 over
KL Rahul flicks McClenaghan to deep backward square-leg for a single to give Chris Gayle the strike on the second ball. The Universe Boss begins defensively and gives the strike back to Rahul, who then drives and drives long as the ball sails over the extra cover boundary for six! That also brings up 1,000 IPL runs for Rahul!
7.59 pm: The players are out in the middle. KL Rahul will take strike against Mitch McClenaghan. Grab your popcorn!
7.55 pm: Lots of support for both teams in Indore tonight, even though it is technically Punjab’s “home” game.
7.47 pm: Mumbai Indians’ fortunes are dependent on their skipper Rohit Sharma. Here is his record this season:
- In MI wins: Innings – 2, Runs – 150, Average – 150.0, S/R – 176.47, 50s – 2
- In MI losses: Innings – 6, Runs – 46, Average – 7.7, S/R – 90.19, Best – 18.
7.44 pm: Here are the two playing XIs.
Kings XI Punjab: Chris Gayle, KL Rahul (wk), Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair, Yuvraj Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, R Ashwin (c), Andrew Tye, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Ankit Rajpoot.

As many as three changes for Punjab – Yuvraj Singh, Marcus Stoinis and Axar Patel are all back into the playing XI.
7.32 pm: Mumbai Indians win the toss and Rohit Sharma expectedly chooses to field. R Ashwin says he would have done the same.
7.20 pm: Nothing less than a win will do for Mumbai Indians tonight. Stay tuned for the toss in about 10 minutes.
7.14 pm: Danny Morrison says there is live grass on the surface in Indore. The fast bowlers must be thrilled.
7.08 pm: Kings XI Punjab have a good record at their adopted home ground in Indore.
7.04 pm: Correction
Kings XI Punjab have in fact dropped one spot to fourth in the table. However, they have two games in hand over third-placed Kolkata Knight Riders and both teams are on 10 points.
7 pm: The Kings XI Punjab are back in action after more than a week’s rest but will be glad that their position in the Indian Premier League table has not changed from third.
KXIP have five wins out of their seven matches so far, and are playing for the first time in their adopted home ground in Indore.
The Mumbai Indians’ chances of progressing to the auctions are hanging by a thread after just two wins from eight matches. Only a perfect record in their remaining six matches can sneak them into the playoffs.
