A two-year-old girl’s body was found floating in a pond in Gujarat’s Morbi district on Thursday, reported The Times of India. The police suspect the child was raped and murdered.
“The [child went] missing late on Wednesday night from the quarters where the family lives,” a Morbi police official told the Hindustan Times. “Her body was later recovered from a nearby pond located on Jetpar Road on Thursday evening.” She was allegedly drowned by the assailant, reported The Times of India. The girl’s parents are migrant workers from Bihar and currently employed at a ceramic tile factory in Morbi.
Shaktisinh Gohel, sub-inspector at Morbi taluk police station, told The Times of India that they suspected the child was raped “as there are injury marks on her private parts and lips”. The police are awaiting the postmortem report, he added.
This comes 10 days after a four-year-old girl was allegedly raped in Kuranga village in the state’s Jamnagar district, according to The Times of India. The police have questioned nearly 1,000 suspects in that case, but the culprit is yet to be identified.
