Former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard marked his entry as a professional coach after agreeing to a three-year deal with Scottish giants Rangers on Friday, SkySports reported.
Gerrard’s assistant will be another former Liverpool player, Gary McAllister.
The former midfielder will take over the reigns from Graeme Murty, who was recently sacked after Rangers succumbed to a humbling 0-5 loss to arch-rivals Celtic. Incidentally, the Scottish champions are currently coached by Gerrard’s former manager, Brendan Rodgers.
After bringing the curtains down on his decorated career, which ended with a stint at Major League side LA Galaxy, Gerrard became a television pundit and youth team coach.
In April last year, the 37-year-old was appointed as the coach of the Liverpool U-18 side. His side forged impressive displays in the Premier League and the Uefa Youth League.
Gerrard agreed to move to the Ibrox on Thursday after returning from Rome, where Liverpool sealed their first Champions League final since 2007. He held talks with Rangers’s director of football Mark Allen and head of scouting Andy Scoulding.
