At least ten people died after heavy rain in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, IANS reported.
The rain was triggered by a cyclonic circulation over central India and a depression over Lakshadweep. The India Meteorological Department has warned of a thunderstorm in the two states on Friday and Saturday.
Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds wreaked havoc in both states, uprooting several trees and electricity poles. Low-lying areas were inundated, leading to heavy traffic snarls. At least five people were killed in rain-related incidents in each state.
Three people who died were killed by lightning in Guntur and Prakasam districts of Andhra Pradesh. In Guntur town, a man died after a hoarding fell on him, while another person was crushed to death under a tree in Kurnool district.
In Telangana, three people, including two boys aged seven and 11, died after being struck by lightning in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district, according to The New Indian Express. A 70-year-old man died after the roof of his house collapsed in Warangal district, while another person died because of a wall collapse in Hyderabad.
Thursday’s rain also damaged mango, paddy, maize and other crops, and produce at market yards in the two states. Several cattle also died.
