At least 27 people died on Thursday when a bus they were travelling in overturned and caught fire on NH28 in Bihar’s Motihari district, said the state Disaster Management Minister Dinesh Chandra Yadav.
The bus, carrying 32 passengers, was going from Muzaffarpur to New Delhi, according to India Today. Station House Officer at Kotwa police station Vijay Sinha told The Times of India that only four people could be rescued from the bus. “They all suffered burn injuries and were rushed to Sadar hospital,” he added.
He said the bus belonged to a private operator and the accident took place when the bus driver tried to avoid hitting a two-wheeler. However, Zee News reported that the bus overturned while negotiating a large pothole.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar told ANI, “It is a really painful incident, local administration officials are present at the spot. We will extend all possible help to the families of those who died.”
