A military plane with nine people on board crashed on a highway in the state of Georgia in the United States on Wednesday, Reuters reported. The plane crashed soon after it took off from the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
An unidentified official said at least five people were killed in the crash. Of the nine people on board, five were crew members and four were passengers from the Puerto Rico National Guard.
Puerto Rico National Guard spokesperson Major Paul Dahlen said the aircraft was on a training mission to Arizona and was scheduled to be retired after the journey. “Although it was an older aircraft, it was in good mechanical condition,” Dahlen said.
Dahlan declined to comment on the number of casualties but said that the images of the crash appeared to “speak for themselves.”
Effingham County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Gena Bilbo said “it is an absolute miracle” that no vehicles on the road were involved in the crash.
