A Delhi court on Wednesday extended Karti Chidambaram’s interim protection from arrest till July 10 in two cases filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate in the Aircel-Maxis case, PTI reported.
Special Judge OP Saini granted relief to the son of Congress leader P Chidambaram after the Enforcement Directorate’s counsel asked for time to argue against Karti Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail application. The counsel said a related matter was pending before the Supreme Court.
On April 16, the court granted Karti Chidambaram interim protection from arrest till May 2.
The case relates to the approvals the Foreign Investment Promotion Board granted for the Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006 when P Chidambaram was the finance minister. Karti Chidambaram allegedly facilitated bribes in the Aircel-Maxis transaction.
The investigative agencies are looking into “the circumstances” in which P Chidambaram, in his capacity as the finance minister, had granted the Foreign Investment Promotion Board approvals.
