An American television series based on best-selling author Paulo Coelho’s novels is in the works, reported Screen International. This will reportedly be the first-ever television drama series adaptation of the Brazilian novelist’s books.
The untitled series will adapt themes and characters from Brida (1990), The Devil And Miss Prym (2000) and The Witch Of Portobello (2006). Produced by FremantleMedia North America along with Random House Studio and Dancing Ledge Productions, the crime thriller will reportedly trace the journey of self-discovery of a young priest who has been shunned by the church and is on the run from a powerful mafia family.
Coehlo will introduce each episode and the themes explored in it, reported Deadline.
“There has never been a more prolific, thought-provoking and socially engaged author as Paulo Coelho,” Dante Di Loreto, FremantleMedia North America President of Scripted Entertainment said. “His stories make us look at the world differently, tapping into our true selves to further discover our place within the journey for hope, inspiration and social change.”
Coelho is best known for his international bestseller The Alchemist (1988). His Veronika Decides to Die (1998) was adapted into a movie by Emily Young in 2009.
