Unidentified men shot an orthopaedic surgeon from South Delhi outside his farmhouse in Fatehpur Beri on Saturday night, the Hindustan Times reported on Monday.
Dr Hans U Nagar, 65, retaliated by firing at least 13 rounds from his licensed pistol, the police said. He was taken to hospital soon after and is now in a stable condition. The gunmen shot him three times and fired nearly two dozen bullets at his car.
The surgeon suspects his brothers were behind the attack, Deputy Commissioner of Police Romil Baaniya said. The police have detained his two brothers for questioning. “The three brothers were involved in a dispute over a property in Gurugram’s Berhampur village for the last decade,” Baaniya told the Hindustan Times. “Multiple civil cases had been filed by the brothers against each other.”
Nagar is a surgeon at a prominent South Delhi hospital and runs his own clinic as well.
“The attackers appear to have entered the farmhouse through the surrounding jungles,” his daughter Tanu told reporters. “They did not appear to have entered through the farmhouse’s main gate. They began firing at the car and my father used his licensed pistol to return fire.”
Police found 16 bullet holes on the car and 22 empty cartridges from the vicinity. They have filed a case of attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.
