A senior faculty member of the Madurai Kamaraj University was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly luring students to provide sexual favours to senior university officials. V Murugan, an assistant professor of the university, was produced before a court on Wednesday morning which sent him to the custody of the Crime Branch for five days, PTI reported.
Murugan is accused of working with Devanga Arts College professor Nirmala Devi to lure young women, The Hindu reported. The college is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University.
The scandal came to light after a telephonic conversation between Devi and a group of college girls was leaked. Devi was arrested on April 16 by the Virudhunagar Police. She reportedly told investigating agencies that Murugan, along with research student Karuppasamy, instigated her to trap the girls.
Karuppasamy has also surrendered before a Madurai court and was remanded in judicial custody till Thursday.
In the leaked audio clip, Devi claimed that she knew Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who is also the chancellor of university. Purohit has denied any link with Devi. He has ordered an inquiry into the scandal by retired Indian Administrative Service officer R Santhanam.
The local police was investigating the case initially, but it was transferred to the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department on April 17.
