Unlike today’s world of high-definition TVs and LED screens with a million colours, the television in India was black and white till as recently as the early 1980s. But on April 25, 1982 – thirty-six years ago – Doordarshan broadcast India’s first ever colour programme.
To celebrate the anniversary, the state-owned television network posted the video above on its official Twitter handle, depicting its famous rotating logo – in colour. The caption reads, “25 April 1982, Doordarshan started the test run of India’s first colour telecast”.
This was a monumental breakthrough at the time as it revolutioned TV watching for the Indian audiences. This allowed sports fans to watch that year’s Asian Games in colour. Soon afterwards, Doordarshan went on to launch the first ever Indian soap, Hum Log, followed by blockbusters like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
