One soldier and a police officer were killed on Tuesday during a shootout with suspected militants in the Lam forest area of Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. All four suspected militants were killed in the gunfight, said Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police SP Vaid.
“With whatever we have collected, it looks like Jaish-e-Mohammed was behind the attack,” Inspector General (Kashmir Range) Swayam Prakash Pani told ANI. Search operations are still under way, he added.
Two Army soldiers were also injured in the gunfight, according to Greater Kashmir.
Security forces, including the Indian Army’s 42 Rashtriya Rifles unit, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force, began a joint operation against suspected militants in the Lam area on Tuesday morning, IANS reported.
The soldier who died was identified as Ajay Kumar of the 42 Rashtriya Rifles. He succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Srinagar. The police officer was identified as Latif Gojri.
