Four engineering students in Hyderabad were detained after they allegedly ran over a man sleeping on the footpath early on Monday. The man, identified as 48-year-old cobbler Ashok Kumar, died of his injuries.
Eyewitnesses said there were four women in the vehicle and all of them appeared to be in an inebriated condition, the Hindustan Times reported. Kumar’s son told the police that the women, aged between 19 and 21, got down from the car “in a state of shock, said sorry and tried to flee, but the locals stopped them”.
The police, however, said the woman driving the car was not drunk. “Preliminary investigations revealed the woman who was driving the vehicle was not drunk and only one of the four women was found to be drunk,” Kushaiguda Police Inspector N Venkata Ramana told the Hindustan Times. Other reports indicated that it was not yet clear if the driver of the car was drunk.
A case of rash driving and negligence was registered and the women were taken to a police station, NDTV reported. The police are investigating if it is a case of drunken driving.
