Avicii was a pioneering electronic dance musician, record producer and DJ who left behind a series of unforgettable songs. On Friday, the Swedish musician whose real name was Tim Bergling, died suddenly at just 28 in Muscat, Oman.
As music and dance lovers expressed their grief, a church in The Netherlands paid an unusual tribute to Avicii’s musical legacy on Saturday.
The bell tower of the Dom Church in Utrecht rang out three of Avicii’s most popular songs – Wake Me Up, Hey Brother and Without Out (original videos below) – so that they could be heard far and wide across the Dutch town.
Arranged by Malgosia Fiebig, the city’s carillonneur, bell ringers played a medley of the songs on a carillon, which is a musical instrument made up of at least 23 bronze bells that is typically housed in the bell tower of a church.
Passers-by all over the town were moved by the tribute, and several of them recorded videos (above and below). One of them, Pim Brassien, told CNN that on Friday, a Dutch radio station played nothing but Avicii songs for two hours.
