Fuel prices across India rose to their highest levels in 55 months on Thursday, as global crude prices climbed.
In Delhi, petrol cost Rs 74.08 a litre on Friday, the highest since September 2013, according to Indian Oil. In Kolkata, it retailed at Rs 76.78, in Mumbai at Rs 81.93 and in Chennai at Rs 76.85.
Diesel prices also went up by 4 paise. It cost Rs 65.31 in Delhi, Rs 68.01 in Kolkata, Rs 69.54 in Mumbai, and Rs 68.9 in Chennai.
Petrol prices have gone up by more than 50 paise since the beginning of April, and diesel by more than 90 paise. Since the beginning of this year, petrol prices have risen by Rs 4 a litre, and diesel by Rs 5 to Rs 6 a litre, NDTV reported.
In June, state-owned oil companies such as the Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation discontinued a 15-year practice of revising rates every fortnight and switched to daily revisions. Consequently, any rise in global crude prices affects rates in India almost immediately.
