India’s bid to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council now has the support of Nordic countries. Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Norway also backed India’s bid to become a member of the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group, PTI reported.

“The Nordic countries agree that India is a strong candidate for a permanent seat in a reformed Security Council expanded with both permanent and non-permanent members,” they said in a joint statement released after the first “India-Nordic Summit: Shared Values, Mutual Prosperity”.

India and Sweden co-hosted the summit during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Stockholm. At the event, Modi and his counterparts from the five Nordic nations pledged their support for the UN and Secretary-General António Guterres’ efforts to bring in reforms in the international body to make it more accountable to the current state of global affairs. They also reaffirmed their their commitment to working towards the sustainable development goals for 2030 and the Paris climate deal.

The countries discussed strengthening global security, improving economic growth, focusing on innovation and working to check climate change and also improve cooperation.
