A woman died on Tuesday after an explosion in the engine of a Southwest Airlines flight she was travelling in exploded and shattered the window she was sitting next to, Reuters reported. An initial investigation indicated that she was partially sucked into the window mid-air for several minutes while other passengers tried to pull her back inside the aircraft.
Several other passengers were injured during the incident, BBC reported. The Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 made an emergency landing in Philadelphia. It was scheduled to fly from New York to Dallas.
The deceased has been identified as 43-year-old Jennifer Riordan. National Transportation Safety Board Chairperson Robert Sumwalt said the investigation indicated that an engine fan blade may have been broken off.
