Cathy Yan is likely to direct the spinoff movie based on Margot Robbie’s Suicide Squad character Harley Quinn, Hollywood trade magazines reported on Tuesday. Production is expected to begin at the end of the year.
“Yan, a former Wall St. Journal reporter who made her feature debut with Sundance entry ‘Dead Pigs’, will be the second female filmmaker to direct a DC film, following Patty Jenkins with ‘Wonder Woman,’” Variety reported. “She will also be the first Asian woman to helm a movie from the DC Comics universe. DC previously tapped Ava DuVernay to direct ‘New Gods,’ which is still in development.”
The Warner Bros production is expected to be based on the Birds of Prey comic, featuring a female-led team. “Sources are describing the project as an all-female variation on Suicide Squad,” The Hollywood Reporter said. A sequel is in the works for Suicide Squad, in which Jared Leto plays Joker.
