The Delhi High Court on Monday upheld the life sentence of five men convicted of raping a Danish woman in the city in 2014. Delhi’s Tiz Hazari court had convicted them of gangrape in June 2016.
On January 4, 2014, nine persons, including three juveniles, had raped the 52-year-old woman at knifepoint after leading her to an isolated spot near the New Delhi railway station. The woman had asked them for directions to her hotel in Delhi’s Paharganj locality.
The High Court on Monday dismissed the appeal challenging the trial court order convicting the five and their jail term. Justices S Muralidhar and IS Mehta said the woman’s testimony and the DNA report were enough evidence to prove their guilt, PTI reported.
Arjun (23), Raju alias Chhakka (24), Mohammad Raja (24), Mahendra alias Ganja (28) and Raju alias Bajji (25) were convicted under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including for gangrape, dacoity, abduction, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation and common intention.
Shyam Lal, another accused in the case, died in Tihar Jail in February 2016. The Juvenile Justice Board is handling the proceedings of the three minors accused in the case.
