M Sathiyavathy, who has held several important positions in the Central Government during her 35-year career, took the oath of office and secrecy as a member of Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) on Monday. She is an officer of the 1982 batch of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) of AGMUT cadre, and the oath was administered by Vinay Mittal, Chairman of the UPSC.

Prior to joining the Commission, she held the position of Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment. According to the notification issued by the Press Information Bureau, in her Cadre she has held various responsible positions such as Secretary in the Department of Welfare, Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of Puducherry; Secretary in the Department of Education & Human Resource Development, Government of Puducherry; and Chief Secretary, Govt. of Puducherry.

During her distinguished career, she has served as the first woman Director General of Civil Aviation, after which she was appointed as OSD to Ministry of Labour & Employment. She then joined as Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employment, a post she has held up to now.

Other positions that Sathiyavathy has held include Joint DG in the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce & Industry; Controller, ISRO Satellite Centre, Department of Space; Member Secretary, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles; Additional Secretary & Financial Adviser, Ministry of Civil Aviation; and Director General, Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The UPSC is responsible for recruitment of Group A and Group B officers for central government and conducts civil services examinations.
