At least 18 people died and 14 were injured after the truck they were travelling in crashed into a barricade on the Pune-Satara highway in Maharashtra on Tuesday morning, the Hindustan Times reported.
Most of the victims were construction workers and hailed from Karnataka, according to initial reports from the site. Among the deceased are many children. The injured have been admitted to a hospital in Khandala.
“We suspect the driver was speeding and lost control as he was on a curved slope on this S- shaped patch of the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway,” Assistant Inspector Yuvraj Hande of Pargaon-Khandala police station told The Indian Express. Hande said the accident took place near the Khambatki tunnel.
More details are awaited.
